## Revision as of 08:01, 8 July 2007

While there are many useful books about SPSS, the great benefit of the internet is instant (and free) access to interactive tutorials and instructional forums to learn how to use SPSS. Detailed below are comprehensive websites that walk you through SPSS step-by-step, some of which have short videos which can be very helpful since SPSS is a point-and-click software with pull-down menus so *seeing* how to use SPSS can sometimes be more user-friendly than simply reading about it.

## Contents |

## What is SPSS?

- SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is one of the most widely used software programs for analyzing data (Wikipedia has good pages about listing of all statistical programs and descriptive comparison of each.
- SPSS is organized around base software (e.g., basic statistical techniques like frequencies, means, t-test, ANOVA, nonparametric, linear regression, factor analysis, etc.) with additional add-on modules (e.g., regression models, multivariate models, classification trees, etc.)
- SPSS is considered by some to be more user-friendly because it uses pull-down menus instead of command syntax such as SAS (i.e., in SPSS the pull-down menus activate the command syntax which is running in the background.)

## Online tutorials about SPSS

**with videos...**

- SPSS On-Line Training Workshop which provides tutorials integrated with videos about conducting almost the entire range of SPSS features.
- Texas A&M SPSS Tutorials has a vast array of online videos for everything from installing and using SPSS to advanced topics like robust regression and bootstrapping.
- UCLA SPSS Resources page has an SPSS Starter Kit, including videos for introductory materials, syntax, and regression.
- APA Online Psychology Laboratory has videos for conducting descriptives, frequencies, ratios, means, t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, and chi-square.

**with visual guides**...

- Visual Statistics Studio which has an online guide to SPSS and other statistic-related visual guides.
- Gettting Started with SPSS for Windows has helpful tutorials on a variety of topics.
- U. of Texas Statistical Software Tutorials has visual guides to getting started with SPSS, descriptive and inferential statistics, displaying data, and advanced topics.
- Harvard-MIT Data Center Guide to SPSS has visual tutorials for many operations in SPSS.

**without videos or visuals, but still excellent text resources...**

- Statnotes which provides a large collection of analyses in SPSS.
- Internet Guide to SPSS for Windows provides a large collection of analyses in SPSS.

## I need more help!

- The best place to start is asking people for help because there is undoubtedly someone who has asked the same question you have and already found the answer, so I would recommend first seeing the next section below about Who can I ask if I have a question about SPSS?
- SPSS has created excellent resources for you such as:

- SPSS homepage has a searchable database.
- SPSS "Help Menu" is acessible from the copy of SPSS on your computer
- SPSS manuals that can with SPSS on the CD

- The next line of defense are some of the better online resources such as:

- Raynald's SPSS Tools website which has information about syntax, macros, scripts, python, tips, etc.

- There are also online archives to search through...

- The SPSS listserv has an archive which you can search by month or keywords
- The SPSS Group on GoogleGroups has an archive that can be searched.
- An FAQ section on the U. of Texas Statistical Software Tutorials website

## Who can I ask if I have a question about SPSS?

- There is a SPSS listserv where experts can answer your questions. You can login here
- There is a SPSS Group in "GoogleGroups" which may answer your questions here.
- Raynald's SPSS Tools website says he can also answer questions directed to him about SPSS.
